MacEffects is proud to be the authorized distributor of the Appletini ONE for the United States, Canada, Mexico and Australia.

The Appletini ONE packs a whole shelf of modern upgrades into a single slot of your Apple IIe. At its heart is a Xilinx Zynq-7020, which combines an FPGA with two 766 MHz ARM cores. It monitors the Apple II bus cycle by cycle and stands in for many cards at once: video, acceleration, memory, sound, storage, networking, printing and more. Your Apple IIe stays the same machine it always was; it simply gains decades of upgrades next door.

The Appletini ONE (Rev. A3) was designed by Karl "KKR75" Asseily, with firmware by Henri "rikkles" Asseily.

Features

  • Cycle-accurate HDMI video over a mini-HDMI port, reproducing the real NTSC/PAL display dot for dot with no scaler or capture card needed.
  • Super Hi-Res (SHR) and extended SHR4 modes, plus SuperSprite (TMS9918) graphics.
  • Optional CRT effects including scanlines, phosphor glow and ghosting.
  • A virtual TransWarp-class accelerator running up to 33 MHz, with a 1 MHz lock for timing-sensitive software. Disk access is accelerated too.
  • 8 MB of RAM, plus a 32 MB RAM disk.
  • A choice of coprocessor: an 80 MHz Z80 Applicard for CP/M, or an 8088 with 640 KB that boots MS-DOS.
  • A virtual Phasor (dual Mockingboard) with 12 sound channels and 2 speech chips, output through the card's own 3.5 mm stereo audio jack. A real Mockingboard can be used alongside it.
  • SmartPort hard disk booting from microSD, and Disk II emulation with WOZ image support for copy-protected titles.
  • The microSD card can be mounted on a PC or Mac over USB-C, or shared over FTP on your local network.
  • USB-C mouse support, presented to the Apple IIe as a genuine mouse card. A keyboard and more can be added through a standard USB hub.
  • A virtual Uthernet II with a built-in RJ45 Ethernet port for real TCP/IP networking. The bundled disk can browse the web and display images.
  • A virtual Super Serial Card with a color ImageWriter II: print from any software and each page is saved to the microSD card as a PNG, with printouts viewable from the on-screen menu.

Hardware highlights

  • Xilinx Zynq XC7Z020 FPGA/ARM system-on-chip with two DDR3L SDRAM chips and PSRAM.
  • Rear-edge connections: mini-HDMI, RJ45 Ethernet, two USB-C ports (one to a PC/host, one for mouse/devices), 3.5 mm audio, a 2.1 mm DC power jack, and a microSD slot.
  • Dedicated Ethernet controller and AKM audio chip.
  • Real-time clock with an on-board coin cell battery holder.
  • PWR, DONE and status LEDs, a 4-position configuration switch, and a JTAG header for developers.
  • Pads for an optional optical S/PDIF output.
  • Open-source project: github.com/hasseily/appletini-one

Compatibility

The Appletini ONE is certified for the Apple IIe, both unenhanced and enhanced, NTSC and PAL. Support for the Apple II/II+ (including EuroPlus) and Apple IIgs is still being tested and is not guaranteed for this version of the card.

What's in the box

The Appletini ONE card only. A microSD card is needed for storage, disk images and printing, and an HDMI cable is needed for video. The following add-ons are available:

  • Mini-HDMI to HDMI cable: $10 connects the card to any modern HDMI display.
  • Preloaded 64 GB microSD card: $15 ready to use with the Appletini ONE software and disk images.
  • 12V 3A power supply (2.1 mm barrel): $13.5 for the card's DC power jack.

Availability

MacEffects is the authorized source for the Appletini ONE in the US, Canada, Mexico and Australia. Cards are built in small batches, and shipping begins October 2026.
